Other Facilities

Other underground installations known to exist in Switzerland are:

Near St Maurice. One of the largest underground artillery forts was dug in a mountain on the east side of the highway. It is said to have 40km of tunnels;

St Reuenthal. This fort was built in 1937 for protection against Germany. Its armament consisted of 75mm guns. It closed in the late 1980s and has been turned into a tourist attraction;

At Stansstad, south of Lucerne. Fort Fürigen was also turned into a museum;

A few miles east of Vallorbe, as a machine-gun post. It is also now a museum;

At Evionnaz. A machine-gun post was built inside rock near a residential area;

West of Interlaken on the south side of the highway. The presence of a loading dock suggests it is a supply depot. A very similar depot is seen on the west side of the Interlaken–Lauterbrunnen road;

South of Alpnach on the east side of the highway. A bunker entrance can be seen in the rock. The entrance is painted in dark camouflage colours;

At every military airfield, as earth-covered hangars. These are plainly visible at such places at Alpnach, Reichenbach, Saanen, St Stephen and Wilderswil;

Near Amsteg, a former government bunker is now used by Swiss Data Safe; and

At Hagerbach, east of Zürich, owned by private industry as a test tunnel.
